\nintertwined as they relate to healthcare dilemmas. The
\npractical application of ethics in the healthcare set-

\nvider, and organizational experiences through Reality
\nChecks; and legal rulings and summaries through
\nlegal Case Studies. The book concludes with a closet

\nThe reader will learn how to evaluate and distin-
\nguish between the rightness and wrongness of alterna-
\ntive courses of action when faced with complex ethical
\ndilemmas. Ethics in the healthcare setting focuses on
\ndoing the right thing for both patients and caregivers.
\nWhen people consider matters of ethics, they often
\ninvolve matters of freedom in regard to one\u2019s personal
\nchoices, judgments about human character, and obli-
\ngations to others.
\nThis book, as with the previous five editions,
\nstarts with the premise that to act in an ethical
\nmanner means to engage in conduct according to
\naccepted principles of right and wrong. The author\u2019s
\nobjective is to provide the reader with the back-
\nground knowledge necessary to understand that
\nethical behavior begins with understanding that we
\nhave alternatives and choices to make about how we

\ngood decisions, we must first understand that they

\nA study titled \u201cDoes Ethics Education Influence
\nthe Moral Action of Practicing Nurses and Social
\nWorkers?,\u201d published in the American Journal of
\nBioethics in July 2008, showed that \u201cethics education
\nhas a significant positive influence on moral confi-
\ndence, moral action, and use of ethics resources.\u201di
\nThis sixth edition is not an indictment of any profes-
\nsion or organization. It does, however, illustrate how
\na minority of people can often cast a dark shadow on
