PREFACE
interventional cardiology continues to demonstrate that it is among the most dynamic and rapidly changing specialties in the field of medicine. Since the inception of the
ABIM Interventional Cardiology Specialty in 1999, new procedures and new data are generated yearly. Because certifying examinations test updated cognitive knowledge, a concise yet comprehensive review of the pertinent material is important. As continuing education in interventional cardiology is one of the major missions of the SCAI, we believe this SCAI Interventional Cardiology Board review book fulfills that mission in assisting fellows-in-training, students, residents, and those physicians wishing to review and renew their knowledge base and pass the test.
Coronary interventions still occupy a major part of testable material, but percutaneous structural heart disease interventions as well as some peripheral vascular interventions are now commonplace and will certainly be part of this testable knowledge base. As part of that knowledge base, a few of the most well-known studies are used to demonstrate an understanding of the underpinnings for use of modern pharmacologic therapies and pathophysiologic mechanisms directing selection of interventional modalities. Current practice guidelines are highly likely to be included by the examiners.
In this new fourth edition, the sections on structural heart interventions focusing on transcatheter aortic valve replacement, percutaneous mitral valve repair (MitraClip), closure of atrial septal defects, and left atrial appendage occluder indications have been expanded. While most of the sections on basic science, the fundamentals of atherosclerosis, including endothelial function and restenosis, the pharmacology of
interventional practice has been updated. More attention has been paid to the principles of imaging, anatomy, and coronary physiology for application in PCI. Specific commonly encountered coronary interventional patient subsets, critical aspects of patient management, peripheral vascular disease, and finally, guidelines are reviewed.
