Overcoming supply chain issues affecting re-<br \/>\nagents, other consumables and disposables, along with<br \/>\nstaffing and equipment issues highlighted the impor-<br \/>\ntance of robust laboratory services as well as the ingenu-<br \/>\nity and creativity of laboratorians to meet those<br \/>\nchallenges head on. Polymerase chain reaction became<br \/>\na household term and the gold standard for viral detec-<br \/>\ntion. The laboratory-developed test in several varieties<br \/>\nonce again became the go-to assay that saved the day.<br \/>\nFrom diagnostic testing through screening and surveil-<br \/>\nlance testing and ultimately viral sequencing to detect<br \/>\nvariant strains of SARS-CoV-2, our laboratories deliv-<br \/>\nered on the unmet and uncertain needs of providers<br \/>\nand patients globally. At the time of this writing, coun-<br \/>\ntries have ramped up efforts to vaccinate individuals<br \/>\nwith one of several available vaccines, and in the United<br \/>\nStates, numbers of new cases and deaths due to COVID-<br \/>\n19 have significantly subsided. Globally, the virus con-<br \/>\ntinues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in<br \/>\nnumerous countries that have had delayed vaccination<br \/>\nresponses, and the potential resurgence of COVID-19<br \/>\ncases in those younger individuals that have yet to be<br \/>\nvaccinated remains a threat. Our hope is that continued<br \/>\nvaccination and mitigation strategies will end this<br \/>\npandemic if we remain vigilant and a new sense of<br \/>\n\u201cnormalcy\u201d will prevail.<br \/>\nIn this fourth issue of Advances in Molecular Pathology, we<br \/>\ninclude another special section on COVID-19 that high-<br \/>\nlights experiences from a laboratory perspective, sero-<br \/>\nlogic testing, and genomic surveillance of variants.<br \/>\nOur colleagues and authors found the time to shed light<br \/>\non some of the more interesting developments in the<br \/>\nfield of molecular pathology despite the burden that<br \/>\nthe pandemic has taken on all of us. Clinical genomics<br \/>\nis not a passing fad as some had predicted; it is here to<br \/>\nstay, and our stewardship of the testing on the analytical<br \/>\nand interpretative sides remains critical to patient care.<br \/>\nIn this issue, we review advances in the field of molecular pathology with regards to developments in<br \/>\ngenetic disease, hematologic disease, infectious disease,<br \/>\npharmacogenomics, solid tumors, and informatics.<br \/>\nSeveral articles present novel technologies, such as<br \/>\noptimal genome mapping, point-of-care diagnostics,<br \/>\nand artificial intelligence. Operationalizing genomic<br \/>\nmedicine in a clinical setting and assessing<br \/>\nminimal residual disease, cell-free nucleic acids,<br \/>\nand tumor mutation burden are discussed as impactful<br \/>\nstrategies in the management of the patient with cancer.<br \/>\nFinally, germline variants, nutrigenomics, and hyper-<br \/>\ntension are presented as new applications of<br \/>\npharmacogenomics.<br \/>\nI am grateful to those friends and colleagues who<br \/>\nonce again during the most pressing of times agreed<br \/>\nto become section editors and authors of the fantastic<br \/>\narticles presented here.<br \/>\nHappy reading!<br \/>\nGregory J.
