Preface

When we embarked on this journey, review books were scarce for nurse practitioners. As seasoned nurse educators with years of experience preparing undergraduates for the NCLEX exam, we recognized the value of discipline-specific practice tests. This realization sparked the idea for this book.

Research confirms that answering numerous sample questions is the most effective way to prepare for multiple-choice exams like the current certification exam. We identified a need for a comprehensive resource with ample practice questions, rationales, and test-taking strategies. Each edition has been meticulously updated with new standards, guidelines, and additional questions. This edition caters to both MS and DNP graduates, incorporating expanded gerontology content since the fourth edition to align with the integration of adult and gerontology content in the exam.

Success on multiple-choice exams is a skill honed through practice, much like playing tennis. We recommend starting with Chapters 1 and 2 to familiarize yourself with the exam format and create a personalized study plan. Taking one of the practice tests at the back of the book will help you assess your baseline knowledge and identify areas for improvement. Then, focus your study on the chapters covering the content areas where you need the most reinforcement.

Nursing is a dynamic field, blending art and science, with diverse viewpoints and practices. While we’ve strived to ensure the content is up-to-date and relevant, drawing from multiple sources for each question’s rationale, there may be differing opinions on treatment options. References for each question are listed at the end of each chapter. We encourage you to use this book in conjunction with our textbook, “Primary Care: The Art and Science of Advanced Practice Nursing–An Interprofessional Approach,” which provides further elaboration on each rationale.

Even after passing the certification exam, this book can serve as a valuable study guide for continuous learning. We suggest annotating questions with comments to aid your memory and highlight areas for further research.
