\u201cFor whom, and why?\u201d Our target audience and the purpose of this book.<\/p>\n
This atlas is meant to be a useful \u201cvade mecum\u201d for all colleagues interested and involved<\/p>\n
in nerve sonography in order to locate nerves as quickly and easily as possible in daily clinical<\/p>\n
practice. You could put it this way, too: \u201cNever search again for a nerve\u201d\u00a0\u2013 for in this book, you<\/p>\n
have already found it. Thus, the \u201cWhy?\u201d has already been nearly answered since nothing com-<\/p>\n
parable exists until now. With this book, you will save valuable time, time that most certainly<\/p>\n
can be better used for a subsequent diagnosis, intervention, and\/or therapy. Quite deliberately,<\/p>\n
this atlas does not contain any information on these latter aspects!<\/p>\n
Due to the clear descriptions of visible and\/or palpable \u201cexternal\u201d landmarks by illustra-<\/p>\n
tions and short (!) texts, the ultrasound probe can be placed optimally from the beginning:<\/p>\n
initial probe positioning. In the ultrasound images, a few but characteristic \u201cinternal\u201d land-<\/p>\n
marks are shown, which help in finding the location and topographic allocation of the \u201ctarget<\/p>\n
structure\u201d nerve. As a valuable support for practical application, we, in particular, documented<\/p>\n
those areas where specific nerves can be delimited best: the respective \u201cpoint of optimal visi-<\/p>\n
bility\u201d (POV). Such a point does exist for (nearly) any peripheral nerve! Not without reason,<\/p>\n
the \u201cPOV\u201d does take central position in the overview tables for each single nerve! We are<\/p>\n
convinced that, especially in cases of unfavorable sonographic conditions, the exact knowl-<\/p>\n
edge of these POVs can be of decisive help.<\/p>\n
All this shows that the authors paid very special attention to the practical aspects of nerve<\/p>\n
sonography. As a result, relevant variations were mentioned, and\u00a0\u2013 if feasible and reasonable\u00a0\u2013<\/p>\n
alternative plans were addressed. Additionally, some comments (concerning, e.g., positioning<\/p>\n
or pitfalls) were enclosed. References to the innumerable studies concerning nerve sonogra-<\/p>\n
phy, however, were intentionally left out since including them would have conflicted with the<\/p>\n
intention of this compact manual.<\/p>\n
We do hope very much that you will be pleased by this atlas and that, above all, it will be<\/p>\n
used frequently!<\/p>\n
We should close our introduction with a \u201cquotation\u201d inspired by the famous German author<\/p>\n
Wilhelm Busch (1832\u20131908):<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ll miss a nerve quite easily, if searched for it where it can\u2019t be.\u201d<\/p>\n
