The Third Edition of this book has been updated to reflect significant recent advancements in thyroid pathology. These include the introduction of new disease entities, refinements in the pathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of various thyroid lesions, and updates to thyroid cancer staging and cytology classification. These developments, along with a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms of thyroid cancer, have had a direct impact on both pathology and clinical practice.

This edition features new content in every chapter, accompanied by numerous new illustrations, diagrams, and tables. Advances in molecular pathogenesis and diagnostic techniques—driven by next-generation DNA sequencing—have necessitated a complete rewrite of relevant sections. Additionally, the book benefits from an expanded team of contributors, including expert pathologists, cytologists, and clinicians, who provide greater depth to the topics covered. Three new chapters have been added, focusing on noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features, thyroid cancer staging, and the principles of reporting thyroid cytology.

Designed to be comprehensive, this book addresses both nonneoplastic and neoplastic thyroid diseases. It provides a detailed discussion of classic morphology and molecular genetics, integrating current knowledge on epidemiology, etiology, and molecular pathogenesis with disease morphology. As in previous editions, all main chapters follow a consistent structure, covering incidence, epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, molecular genetics, clinical presentation, and imaging. This is followed by in-depth discussions on gross and microscopic findings, immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, electron microscopy, cytology, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Readers have found this uniform structure helpful for quickly locating relevant information, so it has been maintained in the Third Edition.

We hope this book continues to be a valuable resource for professionals dealing with complex diagnostic cases, rare and emerging thyroid diseases, and the interpretation of ancillary studies and novel molecular tests. It is intended for practicing pathologists, pathology trainees, molecular pathologists, endocrinologists, endocrine and head and neck surgeons, radiologists, internists, and researchers with an interest in thyroid diseases.
