PURPOSE OF THE TEXT<\/p>\n
In this text, the reader is encouraged to become a student of the<\/p>\n
community, learn from families and other aggregates in the<\/p>\n
community how they define and promote their own health, and<\/p>\n
learn how to become an advocate of the community by working<\/p>\n
with it to initiate change. The student is exposed to the<\/p>\n
complexity and rich diversity of the community and is shown<\/p>\n
evidence of how the community organizes to meet change.<\/p>\n
The use of language or terminology by clients and agencies<\/p>\n
varies in different parts of the United States, and it may vary<\/p>\n
from that used by government officials. The contributors to this<\/p>\n
text are a diverse group from various parts of the United States.<\/p>\n
Their terms vary from chapter to chapter and from those in use<\/p>\n
in local communities. For example, some authors refer to Af-<\/p>\n
rican Americans, some to blacks, some to European Americans,<\/p>\n
and some to whites. The student must be familiar with a range<\/p>\n
of terms and, most important, know what is used in his or her<\/p>\n
local community.<\/p>\n
