How to use this book
\nThis book is written to help make you a better assessor of people presenting with mental health problems. Although it is not intended to be a substitute for a good psychiatry textbook, we do try to give some understanding of what it is you are assessing. The book has extra content online, and you can access this using the login code provided with this book.
\nWe had three groups in mind when writing this book:
\n\u2022 Medical students and other trainees who are spending
\nsome time in training with a mental health service and
\nwant to become adept and confident in taking a history
\nand mental state examination \u2013 read Sections 1 and 2,
\nand there is also some help in preparing for the
\npsychiatry examination in Section 7.
\n\u2022 Doctors who are either starting training, refreshing their
\nskills, or preparing for clinical examinations, or those
\nworking in specific services like general hospitals or
\nwith specific groups like older people, will benefit from
\nthe whole book. The in-depth topics in Section 6
\nshould help provide a more advanced knowledge of a
\ntopic.
\n\u2022 Nursing and allied health team professionals and
\nstudents who work in or have a placement with
\nmultidisciplinary teams should also find the book useful
\nto build up a solid basis for a good assessment but
