\nCritical (intensive) care is inherently a multidisciplinary specialty. On
\na daily basis, the practicing intensivist must integrate knowledge and
\npractices from many medical specialties (surgery, transplant
\nmedicine, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, neurology,
\nanesthesiology, pain medicine, and many others) and collaborate
\nclosely with medical professionals from many specialties (physicians,
\nnurses, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, nutritionists,
\npharmacists, etc.). Today\u2019s critical care toolbox, thus, must include
\nnot only the most up-to-date clinical knowledge but also
\ncommunication, team building, and management skills.
\nSince its inception in the 1950s polio era, critical care has
\nevolved into its own discipline with specialized caregivers, equipment
\nand clinical training, specific research topics, and an ability to care
\nfor ever sicker patients. Due, in part, to the development of
\nworldwide critical care research networks, a robust evidence base
\nnow exists to inform critical care practice and has allowed
\nintensivists to optimize the management of conditions common to
\nintensive care patients. Insights from this evidence base have
\nconsiderably improved survival from acute respiratory distress
\nsyndrome (ARDS) and sepsis and advanced the development of
\nsubspecialty intensive care units (ICUs; medical and surgical ICUs,
\ntrauma, burn, transplant, neurologic, and cardiac ICUs among
\nothers). In 2023, modern critical care not only involves
\ntechnologically advanced life support and therapeutic strategies for
\nacute illness but also focuses on longer-term quality of life and
\noutcome measures well beyond the ICU stay. The recent COVID
\npandemic has further highlighted the importance of critical care and
\nserved as an additional catalyst for investigation and discovery.
\nOur goal in this book is to organize this extensive body of
\nknowledge for our readers in an easy-to-view format. This
\nsignificantly updated and reorganized third edition is intended to
\nprovide concise, evidence-based information for all critical (intensive)
\ncare professionals, from students who are having their first
\nencounter with ICUs and critically ill patients to clinicians seeking a
\nquick update on topics they may not have encountered recently. The
\n50 chapters span the depth and breadth of acute care and, in
\naddition to basic critical care topics, include sections on bioweapons,
\ndisaster preparedness, and COVID. To cover this wide diversity of
\ntopics we solicited contributions from leading critical care experts,
\nincorporated recent evidence, improved the table of contents, and
\ncompiled an index of particularly relevant topics for quick access. For
\nreaders interested in the source data, we have included PubMed
\nindexing for easy reference. We are grateful for our authors\u2019 clinical
\ninsights and for sharing their many years of experience.
