The rapidity of change in pathology diagnostics\u2014
\nespecially, but not limited to, cancer diagnosis\u2014with
\nconstant and ever-advancing information makes updat-
\ning any text on this subject matter a daunting task. The
\nrevision of the Atlas of Head and Neck Pathology, now
\nin its fourth edition, has been daunting, including the
\ndedicated time and effort away from family needed to
\ncomplete it, but also in ensuring the inclusion of the
\nconstant flow of updated information relative to the
\ndiseases under discussion. Molecular diagnostics has
\nbecome a critical element in cancer diagnosis specifi-
\ncally (but not solely) in the advancing targeted thera-
\npies offering better outcomes and, more importantly, in
\noffering hope to patients and their families in treating
\ndiseases that previously were considered untreatable or
\nincurable. For pathologists, advances in molecular biol-
\nogy have provided a better understanding of the diseases
\nwe diagnose. However, in compiling a book such as this
\none, the advances in molecular biology are akin to a
\nmoving target with near daily publications documenting
\nnew information and\/or information that might render
\nprior knowledge outdated. We have, to the best of our
\nabilities, tried to provide the most current and relevant
\ninformation to the diseases included in the Atlas. We sin-
\ncerely hope we have succeeded in this endeavor and also
\nhope that we have made this atlas a valuable resource to
\na wide spectrum of individuals with interest in diseases
\nof the head and neck.
\nThe fourth edition of the Atlas of Head and Neck
\nPathology updates and revises the information detailed
\nin the previous edition. The same format is followed
\nas in the prior editions with information provided in
\naccessible bulleted statements rather than in a narrative
\nstyle. Various sections have been expanded to include
\nnewly identified entities and\/or variants (subtypes) of
\npreviously well-established tumors. We have included
\nas much molecular diagnostic information as applicable
\nin the identification of new diseases\/neoplasms, in the
\nunderstanding of their etiology and pathogenesis, and in
\nadvances in treatment and prognosis. The illustrations
\nare a key component of any atlas. To this end, there are
\na total of 4098 images in the this edition, including 1008
\nnew images.
\nIt is my honor to include my colleague Juan C.
\nHernandez-Prera as a coauthor of this edition. Juan
\nis a superb diagnostic surgical pathologist and one of
\nthe ascending head and neck and endocrine patholo-
\ngists, surely to become a worldwide recognized leader
\nin our subspecialty. Juan and I are fortunate to work
\nat the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. The
\nMoffitt Cancer Center is an elite national and interna-
\ntional cancer center whose entire staff is dedicated to
\ntreating cancer patients and in finding a cure for cancer.
\nWe are fortunate to be in an academic environment led
\nby individuals who value the contributions of the entire
\nMoffitt staff and provide an environment that fosters
\nacademics, diagnostics, education, research, collegial-
\nity, and wellness. In particular, we wish to recognize our
\ndepartment\u2019s faculty, administrators, directors, manag-
\ners, supervisors, and technical staff for all their contribu-
\ntions to fulfill our mission of being a premier academic
\npathology department and in their contributions to the
