This edition of Tachdjian\u2019s Pediatric Orthopaedics is the
\nfourth that has been written and edited by the staff of the
\nTexas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. As we research
\nand reevaluate each chapter, we are usually surprised to
\nsee how many things have changed between editions.
\nFor example, in recent years we have seen considerable
\ngrowth in the knowledge and practice in the field of
\npediatric sports subspecialization. In recognition of this
\ngrowth, we have added a new chapter dedicated to pedi-
\natric and adolescent sports conditions, which includes
\nthe most recent developments in the management of
\nconcussion. In the scoliosis chapter, exciting new infor-
\nmation about the rapidly evolving management of early
\nonset scoliosis has been added, including important non-
\noperative measures such as serial casting and bracing, as
\nwell as the use of tethering. The field of genetics is con-
\ntinually expanding, and genetics-related content, which
\nappears in many of our chapters, has been updated to
\nreflect current understanding.
\nTwenty years ago, we took on the challenge to build
\non the groundwork laid by Dr. Mirhan Tachdjian in his
\ntwo editions. Our goal has been to produce a textbook
\nthat fully encompasses the broad field of pediatric ortho-
\npaedics. We have based our descriptions on the best avail-
\nable published knowledge. We have sought to present the
\nmost current evidence from the literature from level 1 to
\n5 in a succinct and readable format. We have augmented
\nthe discussions with recommendations based on personal
\nexperiences of a top-level clinical faculty. When presenting
\ncontroversial topics, we prefer to give the reader the evi-
\ndence from the different arguments so that the reader can
\nmake a reasoned decision after reviewing the conflicting
\nevidence. We carefully avoid the \u201ccookbook\u201d approach in
\nwhich one puts forth their preferred treatment as gospel.
\nWe continue to insist that our text be comprehensive,
\neven though a shorter text would be more convenient to
\nhandle. We fully present each topic, include the descrip-
\ntion of a disorder, and discuss appropriate history and
\nphysical exam, relevant studies, differential diagnosis, and
\ndetails of treatment. We believe that it is important to
\npresent the important details of decision making, and we
\nemphasize the complexity of overall patient care. Our sur-
\ngical discussions stress proper preoperative planning and
\npreparation, as well as description of operative details. We
\nalso provide the important postoperative protocols that
\nare necessary to ensure the best results.<\/p>\n
