The breadth of knowledge one needs to perform excellent vascular
surgery has increased exponentially over the last two decades.
Vascular surgeons have a unique skill set in that they perform and
interpret diagnostic imaging, are actively involved in vascular
patients’ medical management, as well as perform diagnostic and
therapeutic interventions and open reconstructive surgery.
This has made training and education of our medical students,
residents, and fellows very challenging as well as dynamic. This
procedure-based textbook outlines the variety of endovascular,
open, and combined approaches that will be useful for all trainees
as well as experienced vascular surgeons. The goal is to provide a
succinct, diagrammatic approach to all common (as well as some
less common), endovascular, and open procedures, that one could
briefly review the steps as outlined by true practicing experts.
Ideally, this will provide the surgeon a road map to a variety of
contemporary vascular interventions.
While each chapter briefly discusses indications and
contraindications, preoperative planning, surgery, postoperative
management, complications, and results as well as recommended
references, the true contribution of this body of work resides in the
beautiful illustrations and figures provided.
We hope that this collection of operative wisdom will stand as a
benchmark guide for the safe and effective application of some of
medicine’s most sophisticated procedures for the benefit of our
society’s most challenging patients.
