Petty's Principles of Musculoskeletal Treatment and Management provides an up-to-date, evidence-based and person-centred guide to musculoskeletal practice.

Edited by leading experts Kieran Barnard and Dionne Ryder, with contributions by highly regarded physiotherapists from across the UK, it provides a comprehensive overview of the principles underpinning physiotherapy for musculoskeletal conditions. It covers basic principles for treating muscles, nerves and joints, as well as anatomy and physiology, clinical reasoning and rehabilitation skills.

This book is a companion to Petty’s Musculoskeletal Examination and Assessmentand together both volumes cover everything students need to know to examine, assess and treat patients.

In the brand-new edition of this popular textbook, we
have sought to build upon the content conceived and
developed by Dr Nicola J Petty over the course of three
previous editions. This edition has been significantly
updated and new chapters have been added to reflect
the direction of travel in modern musculoskeletal
practice. There are eleven new contributors to this
edition, and the book has benefitted enormously from
the richness of their experience and clinical expertise.
There are three new chapters including one on vascular
pathology (an area often overlooked in musculoskeletal
practice), a chapter on serious pathology and one on
advancing clinical practice. With career opportunities
for clinicians to develop into advanced practice and first
contact practitioner roles within primary care settings,
it is more vital than ever for them to have an appreci-
ation of the wider medical picture including screening
for serious pathologies. This book has sought to provide
some grounding for the aspiring clinician looking to-
wards more advanced roles. We are grateful, not only
for the valuable input each contributor has made to the
text, but also for the energy and enthusiasm to complete
their contribution under tight timescales.
Thanks must go to Elsevier and in particular, Poppy
Garraway who was instrumental in launching this
project and Shravan Kumar for his guidance and sup-
port throughout the publishing process.
The overall aim of the book is to provide a clear
and accessible text for pre-registration students that
provides theory and research evidence underpinning
musculoskeletal treatment and management; it is not
a manual of how to treat and manage, rather it pro-
vides the principles of how to do this. We hope this
provides the reader with the underpinning theory to
be able to work creatively to meet the needs of indi-
vidual patients.
