PREFACE
The fourth edition of the Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Pain
Management represents a major update of the prior edition. This edition contains
an extensive new section on interventional approaches to pain management as
well as substantial updating of content related to the use of opioids for chronic
pain. The appendices have been updated and among other topics provide useful
information on medications commonly used in pain treatment. For the first time,
the Handbook will have full-color images and will be available in e-book format
that can be read on computer, tablet, or smartphone and easily converts to
audiobook.
The intent of the handbook is to provide a focused coverage of the key topics
required pain management with a bias toward the treatment of chronic pain. We
wish to extend our gratitude to all contributors to the current and past editions of
this text.
