PREFACE
\nWhile many advances were made in the field
\nof molecular biology and genomic medicine
\nsince the description of the DNA double he-
\nlix in 1954, the most remarkable, however, began in
\n1989 at the Banbury Conference to discuss the potential
\nof sequencing the human genome. The Human
\nGenome Project proposed that the end results would
\nbe better diagnostic testing, better prognostic testing,
\nadvanced abilities to predict who may be at risk for
\ndeveloping disease, and the development of novel tar-
\ngeted therapies based on genomic profiles. While
\nmany of these have come to fruition, the field of trans-
\nlational or precision medicine continues to develop at a
\nrapid pace driven by new technologies and therapeutic
\nmanagement strategies.
\nThe universal nature of the technologies used to
\nidentify nucleic acids and\/or variants in genes of interest
\nhas evolved from rudimentary gel electrophoresis tech-
\nniques to high throughput, highly complex massively
\nparallel sequencing assays. Along with the many tech-
\nnical advances that allow for the detection and
\nquantification of not only human gene variants but
\nalso microbial gene targets have resulted in unprece-
\ndented clinical testing applications. The added value
\nof molecular test results to patient management strate-
\ngies provides a significant opportunity for clinical labo-
\nratorians to become active members of the health care
\ndelivery team in every medical discipline.
\nIn this inaugural issue of Advances in Molecular
\nPathology, we highlight some of the newest develop-
\nments in molecular testing for genetic diseases, hemato-
\nlogic diseases, infectious diseases, pharmacogenomics,
\nsolid tumors and identity testing that has recently
\noccurred. In addition, we have included several articles
\ndedicated to informatics as this has become an addi-
\ntional area of expertise we will need to acquire. The
\npractice of clinical genomics in an era of precision-
\nbased medicine is dependent upon molecular pathol-
\nogy to assure the highest level of performance for
\nclinical tests that will impact all facets of our health
\ncare delivery system and the patient to whom the tests
\nare directed.
\nOur dedication to enhancing patient outcomes and
\nbetter understanding human disease through molecu-
\nlar diagnostic testing is something we will always strive
\nfor. I am grateful to those friends and colleagues who
\nagreed to becoming section editors and to all of the
\nauthors who contributed articles to this issue as the
\nadvances in this field continue to occur at a record
\npace.
