PREFACE
While many advances were made in the field
of molecular biology and genomic medicine
since the description of the DNA double he-
lix in 1954, the most remarkable, however, began in
1989 at the Banbury Conference to discuss the potential
of sequencing the human genome. The Human
Genome Project proposed that the end results would
be better diagnostic testing, better prognostic testing,
advanced abilities to predict who may be at risk for
developing disease, and the development of novel tar-
geted therapies based on genomic profiles. While
many of these have come to fruition, the field of trans-
lational or precision medicine continues to develop at a
rapid pace driven by new technologies and therapeutic
management strategies.
The universal nature of the technologies used to
identify nucleic acids and/or variants in genes of interest
has evolved from rudimentary gel electrophoresis tech-
niques to high throughput, highly complex massively
parallel sequencing assays. Along with the many tech-
nical advances that allow for the detection and
quantification of not only human gene variants but
also microbial gene targets have resulted in unprece-
dented clinical testing applications. The added value
of molecular test results to patient management strate-
gies provides a significant opportunity for clinical labo-
ratorians to become active members of the health care
delivery team in every medical discipline.
In this inaugural issue of Advances in Molecular
Pathology, we highlight some of the newest develop-
ments in molecular testing for genetic diseases, hemato-
logic diseases, infectious diseases, pharmacogenomics,
solid tumors and identity testing that has recently
occurred. In addition, we have included several articles
dedicated to informatics as this has become an addi-
tional area of expertise we will need to acquire. The
practice of clinical genomics in an era of precision-
based medicine is dependent upon molecular pathol-
ogy to assure the highest level of performance for
clinical tests that will impact all facets of our health
care delivery system and the patient to whom the tests
are directed.
Our dedication to enhancing patient outcomes and
better understanding human disease through molecu-
lar diagnostic testing is something we will always strive
for. I am grateful to those friends and colleagues who
agreed to becoming section editors and to all of the
authors who contributed articles to this issue as the
advances in this field continue to occur at a record
pace.
Happy reading!
