This book was written with the intention of pursuing

Dr. Stephen Goldberg’s vision to make learning ridicu-

lously simple. The reader will quickly acquire basic

knowledge for the diagnosis and management of com-

mon orthopedic conditions encountered in the emergency

roomand the general practitioner’s office.Although this

book is intended for medical students and interns, it is

also useful for nurses, nurse practitioners and medical

assistants.

Thissmall text is not meant to cover all of orthopedics

in depth. It provides a broad overview of key areas that

everyone should know about. For example, the first

chapter addresses general concepts and principlesin the

diagnosis and management of common musculoskeletal

injuries; it describes orthopedic emergencies and rele-

vant clinical signs no one should miss. The subsequent

chapters address the upper and lower limbs, the axial

skeleton,systemic conditions affecting themusculoskele-

tal system, and common pediatric conditions. Each topic

is covered with regardsto the relevant anatomy, the clin-

ical approach, and specific problems not to be overlooked.

This book offersthe opportunity to consult anAtlas of

Orthopedics that is available as a free download from

www.medmaster.net. This will enable the reader to ac-

cessmany radiologic and orthopedic images andmovies.

For the writing of this book, many hours were spent

in the bookstores of Harvard Square in Boston. Young

students rolling in with their suitcases brought back

memories of medical school and the hard days of learn-

ing stuff as rapidly as possible. We also remember that

humoris by farthe best way tomake learning enjoyable

and memorable. We hope this book can provide a fun

way to learn about orthopedics.
